The Benefits Of Yoga And Yummy Dahl

I got up nice and early this morning and did my daily yoga. I ended up going for a 10k run last night (first time in over a year I have ran 10k non stop wit absolutely no knee pain! YAY!) and all the glute strengthening moves was pretty hard to day. My glutes were burning just standing on one leg after a while. So, I guess it’s working.

10ks in one hour! Pretty happy camper!

10ks in one hour! Pretty happy camper!

I was wondering today, what are the benefits of yoga anyway? I know the two major ones for myself, it calms my mind and it helps my running. But, there’s gotta be more to it, since there is so many yogis out there, who doesn’t do any other exercise and they love their Sun Salute and Head Stands. So i’ve done a little reading, and here are the pros on yoga (I’m not sure if there is any cons? If there are, can anyone tell me?!)

  • The deep breathing, through your nose, is really good for your cardiovascular systems and nervous system. This breathing releases tension and finds your happy place.
  • All the compression poses are good for your digestive system, gives it a bit of a massage and helps you get it all moving again.
  • The joints are moved all over the place which is good for your for your flexibility and mobility (and can be insanely painful to begin with).
  • It increases strength and improves your posture.
  • It can reduce stress and anxiety – as I said, it calms your mind.
  • The above is probably one of the reasons why it can lower your blood pressure.
  • It will help you sleep better,
  • Apparently your weight will normalize by itself when practising yoga on a regular basis (I don’t see how this will happen without changing your eating habits too?)
  • You immune system will improve – no more sniffles.
  • And a million more good stuff.

So, I guess, if you have never tried yoga, you should. One of the other great things about yoga is the no pressure attitude of instructors. There is always a level for anyone to be able to do the pose and get challenged enough. You can also take a break whenever you need one, without anyone yelling at you. Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it. I’ll keep you posted on the benefits I will notice the next 28 days!

The benefits of yummy Dahl you might be thinking? That it’s tasty? It cooks itself? You can make heaps and save for later? Or it might even be healthy. I cooked Dahl for dinner tonight, with lots of spices. Yum! I didn’t take any pictures, but I can tell you quickly what I put in

2 onions, 3 garlic cloves, 2cm ginger, 2 tbsp olive oil, 3-4 tomatoes, 2 tbsp tomato paste, 4 cups chicken stock, 1 cup green lentils, cumin, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, salt, pepper.

Chilli Con Carne 2 Chilli Con Carne 3I put the onion, garlic and ginger in the blender and crushed it all, put it in a sauce pan with olive oil. Sautée, put in all the spices, stock, tomato and lentils, stirred and boiled until cooked (That takes about 30-40min, depending on the lentils).  Taste it a few times while its’ cooking and adjust with some more spices or salt. If you like, put a dash of greek yoghurt/sour cream on top and a little fresh coriander if you want it to look pretty (unnecessary on a Sunday night, but by all means – you can do it if you want). Enjoy!

Tomorrow I’ve got yoga booked in at 6:30AM. Will be good to get up and get started that early. I also really enjoyed the green juice I had yesterday, so I might add this in to my 30 day challenge too (I bought heaps of tasty, crunchy greens in my weekly shop today). I have a few people joining me for the challenge, so make sure you leave a comment to tell me you are on track!

Can anyone tell me if they have a healthy and good (and easy, please) recipe for Peanut Butter Ice Cream? I would be forever grateful! Happy Sunday 🙂
